Good value, clean and comfortable hotel.
The friendly hotel staff welcomed us in, even though we had arrived 3 hours early. We asked if we could leave our car in the car park and come back later to check in, but they said our room was actually ready and we could check in immediately. The room was clean, with a microwave, kettle and fridge. The bed was very comfortable and the room was warm and quiet overnight. The decent sized bathroom had a good, spacious shower. There were towels and complimentary toiletries, and the only fault we found was the TV remote needed new batteries, a problem that was immediately and quickly resolved. The hotel is easy to find, with a free car park, and about ten minutes or so walk (to the right) straight to the city centre. A few yards up the road (to the left) is the Black Horse pub, which serves wonderful food. We thought it was a very good hotel, and very good value for the money. We would certainly return and stay again.

Unsafe, unclean, not family friendly
On arrival we were left waiting for some time at the main door, although we arrived with the specified time on the booking.com message service. This was after travelling for some time and we were then informed we were in a adjacent building in room 109. We were not given any further information on policies (check-out time, how to contact reception, safety procedures) I therefore assumed this would be displayed in the room. The receptionist just pointed at the adjacent building from the front door of the main hotel.
When we arrived at the room there was no information regarding how to contact reception, times to check-out or safety procedures. The room had no fire safety notices for procedure or assembly points and the fire alarms were taped over. (HC1,2,3)
The plant pots outside the door were full of cigarette buts. (HC4)
A rubbish heap was the first thing we saw when we came out of our door. (HC5)
The bin in main room had not been emptied. (HC6)
A quadruple room had 3 medium towels and one hand towel, resulting in us being unable to use the shower.
There was only 1 pillow per person, which was very thin and therefore we has to use clothes to make it comfortable to sleep.
Only 1 teaspoon for 4 people, therefore we had to wash it up after making each drink or use a dessert spoon.
The breakfast bar stools were unusable as we could have snagged our clothes on them and quite horrid to look at. (HC7)
The size of the sink was very small and with no vanity unit to rest on we could not use to wash, shave etc. without putting our belongings on the floor and keep bending down to get them.
As we were in a separate building, we could not contact reception with any of these issues or get hold of someone in an emergency.
We travelled up for a family party and could not get ready easily before going out, we had to leave in the morning without being able to use the bathroom amenities.
I might have been nice to have some local information in the room, maybe telling us a taxi number, places local to eat etc. As we didn’t have access to reception, we had to go out looking for somewhere to buy a carton of milk and bottled water in the dark and icy conditions.
No reply to my complaint - reporting to fire regulations authority.

Great Value, friendly staff!
After booking this hotel and then reading a lot of reviews.. I was very worried about staying here, some of the reviews were awful.. but I can honestly say we had a great stay. The hotel is situated near to the city which was brilliant, the room wasn’t perfect but it was clean, the sheets were clean and we had a set of towels each. We had no loo rolls but this was no problem for the lovely receptionist she got some for us. I think for what you pay some guests need to understand that this hotel is not the ritz.. but if there are any issues staff are more than happy to help. Everyone has their preferences I understand that but we had a lovely stay and we will definitely stay again

Very good parking facilities. Make sure you tell them your registration number, so they can register it. Staff were lovely. Very short walk to the town. It’s a slightly different type of hotel room. It has a sink/microwave/fridge in the room. I think they might cater for people who travel for work. The bed was comfortable. Bathroom was a decent size. Problem with no hot water this morning. Bearing in mind the parking and proximity to the town, we would definitely use the hotel again.

cheap and not cheerful
Truly a budget hotel. Everything is done on the cheap. WiFi is unreliable, tv is unusable because it is all logins to streaming sites. You cannot just turn it on & watch. The hot water works occasionally. Parking is the only reason I stay. £60 a night is expensive for what it is.
