Great option in the center of SP!

Reading the reviews here, I have a hard time believing that anyone would decide to stay at a hotel without at least checking their reviews. Well, I've been staying at Castelar for a few years now and I'm treated like family. Everything very clean, friendly staff, very good breakfast. In short: it delivers a lot for the little you pay. As for being located in the center, there are pros and, obviously, cons. If you're going to focus on the (more than obvious) cons, it's simple: choose another neighborhood and another hotel.

Poor Rating in Sleep Quality

When checking in, I made 2 requests: a soundproofed room and one in which the Wi-Fi signal quality was better, as I depend on the service. The employee even wanted to help, but, according to him, the rooms in the second block, which are quieter, do not have an elevator and I had a gigantic and heavy suitcase that required a cart, so I ended up choosing the block with an elevator.
Its main advantage is being located in the Center, which makes getting around easier, it is close to many markets, restaurants and tourist attractions. At the same time, this is also its curse: a deafening noise 24 hours a day, in the most degraded, dangerous and violent Center of all Brazilian capitals. The smell of urine and (sight) feces is common. It's a shame for all of us Brazilians to have as a postcard the few foreigners who come to the country.
As in any old hotel, the room is large – compared to newer hotels. With different bed configurations and views. A small table with two chairs – I was surprised by the ashtray, I'm glad the room didn't smell like cigarettes, as that bothers me a lot. A stool that I used to place my suitcase.
2 single beds separated by a single bedside table. The light switches were concentrated on one panel, which at night created some confusion, to be honest, even during the day. It was all a matter of habit and I only stayed one night. Just for information, the voltage is 127V – this information is important to me, as I have many imported products that are not bivolt and others, although bivolt, require a selector.
For one person there was more than enough space to fit the belongings brought in the luggage.
The minibar was a good size and was from a famous brand and worked very well. I don't like a stocked minibar because of the hassle of the person supplying it coming to knock on your door, because there's no space left for what you want to put in, because the person supplying it can see the contents, normally the temperature is left low – and you only notice it after a long time. when you realize that nothing is as cold as expected - hardly anyone defrosts it (they did it here), so there is always that “iceberg” in the freezer, but the main reason is that I have had problems with undue charges – this is much more common than If you can imagine - normally it's enough to say that I didn't consume it and they remove it from the account, although the mere charge is a vexing situation - if you're going to charge it, do it with the conviction that the person consumed it, otherwise it looks like they "threw green, to harvest mature”, that is, he acted in bad faith - but in a hotel I ended up paying for what I didn't consume, simply because I put a small bottle of water under the minibar, to make room for what was of interest to me and I ended up being charged for that. I make it clear that I had no problems with charges at this hotel.
The Split air conditioning was new, clashing with the entire retro set – I'm not complaining, on the contrary it's a compliment that should be extended to the tube TV.
The TV had the image and tuning of... 14” tube TV – no wonder it practically became extinct. I confess that it was difficult to watch on such a small screen. None of the main connections (HDMI, pen-drive, etc.). The cable TV receiver is not in the room, so I was unable to check the programming on the screen, choose the type of audio and subtitles, program the channel change time or release the channel lock due to the rating and options. of channels is always small. Not only that: there is always a frozen/outdated/unconfigured/poorly tuned channel and you are left depending on the “technician” to reconfigure it and as it is not a priority, some channels improve and others worsen or are changed, when someone takes some action . Opting for this type of tuning is always a problem, so any hotel where the cable TV box is in the room has an advantage – of course this option has an advantage over those hotels that only have open channels. The remote control didn't help either: it had several functions disabled, the highlight being SLEEP (which I really missed and should be included in the sleep quality due to the problems caused), return to the previous channel and TV settings as a whole.
I believe that because it is an old project, they signed up for a WiFi internet plan at the beginning and did not update it, so, although the speed is reasonable, it is unstable, with constant drops and places in the room where the signal does not reach. I think it's a shame that in the 21st century, with plans becoming cheaper and at the same time the speed is increasing, in addition to having the advantage that there is no data transfer limit, there are still hotels that do not offer a fundamental quality service like this.
In the window, blackout and another curtain. The blackout allowed some light to “leak” and the other curtain, although light, was not very opaque, not allowing much natural light to enter, at least it protected privacy. The window did not have acoustic treatment, so external sounds were not attenuated. And they were uncomfortable. Even the wind trapped between the buildings made the window vibrate which made noise. It wasn't just the external sounds that were bothersome, there was a lot of noise coming from the upper floor, which was closed, so it could only be an employee, or even the wind causing something to hit. The floor outside the room was not carpeted, so when someone passed by pushing or pulling a cart, it sounded like a locomotive, such was the noise it made.
The mattresses were hard, to the point of making my ribs hurt. I survived on a lot of muscle relaxants. The pillows were also terrible. There was no spare pillow. What is always annoying - and this was no different - was the sheet that was inadequate for the height of the mattress. It was common, with the movement at night, to wake up without anything between me and the mattress. Alternatively, due to this same movement, it created ripples under my body, leaving it marked. It was common to wake up and lose sleep to stretch the sheets. It's surprising that in Brazil hotels don't use fitted sheets, is it so much more expensive that it doesn't make up for the hassle for guests?
The bathroom was also generously sized. In the sink, the tall tap matched well with the good-sized bowl and allowed complete hygiene – hands and forearms. Here only cold water despite the 2 taps. In the bath, there was an electric shower, which did not heat up enough in the cold. Many shower nozzles were clogged, spraying water in all directions, in a hotel that doesn't offer toiletries or shampoo. To make matters even worse in this area, like every shower supported on a plastic extender, the weight of the shower + water caused it to hang, pushing the guest towards the taps, making the position very uncomfortable for getting wet. There was a rubber mat for the bath, a little mat for getting out of the bath, 2 sets of bath and face towels and 2 soaps. The towel set was very good.
I couldn't evaluate the breakfast included in the rate or the room service, as I didn't use it.
The reception staff were very courteous.
The 2 elevators were more than enough to accommodate the hotel at that time.
Considering that I am not an “ordinary tourist”, as I have lived in hotels for over 9 years, what I value most are the TV channel options (and in this case, the TV itself), wifi internet, maintenance and service, location, and Finally, most importantly, the hotel's sleep quality was terrible. I would negatively highlight the quality of sleep: I had difficulty falling asleep during my 2 stays at this hotel (always in the same room), only managing to do so after doubling my medication and in the early hours of the morning, which is why this was the only hotel that did not I went down for breakfast. In the morning, I woke up in pain and needed medication. Also, negatively, the Wi-Fi signal and instability, the 14” tube TV (there are things that should remain in the past) and its remote control and the shower with clogged holes. Positively, the highlight goes to the location, the minibar (except for the fact that it is stocked), the Split air conditioning, the suitcase frame and the availability of places to store the luggage you brought.
It has never been easy to get a good hotel in the center of any capital, as they are usually old projects and their age is noticeable, especially if the administration is not very interested in updating it or keeping maintenance up to date, as it is often preferable to charge a “more affordable price” of spending a high amount on renovations. I put the expression above in quotation marks, as supply and demand is still the Law of the market, so it is interesting to realize that exactly when the hotel capacity is high and the daily rate is the same, it is the moment that the quality of the services provided drops. as happened in this hotel. I've always hated living in hotels and after 9 years, my patience is at its limit. You end up having a list of hotels that you won't return to at all - which has grown a lot -, another list of hotels that you prefer to avoid and in the middle of it all, you still have to consider the daily rate. I already avoid non-chain hotels, as room invasions when you are not present are common – not that this doesn't also happen in chain hotels, but it is much less common. Guest satisfaction is what matters least, nothing against profit, but they need to “walk” in the same “direction” so that it is good for both sides. I don't recommend the hotel due to the problems I had on 2 separate occasions with my sleep, now if you don't have problems sleeping, the mattress, pillows, TV and internet are not priorities for you, you might want to test it, but always for short stays .

Hotel Castelar was a good experience for me. Hotel location is central in the city and you can approach most of the places easily. Hotel stuff were friendly and helpful all the time. I had a good breakfast there as well. Interior architecture is very good in this hotel. Wooden table, wooden bed frame and lamination and also a beatufily wooden chair helped me feel I was in a superb hotel. The console to manage lights and calls also looked very unique and made me feel good about environment. I recommend this place to anybody want to have good experience for their stay.

Very good hotel, but poorly located

The hotel is good, but unfortunately, it is very poorly located, in a place with a lot of crackheads and homeless people. I didn't have the courage to go out at night. But the hotel is old, but very comfortable. Since I only stayed to sleep, it was worth it. But if you're staying for longer days and with children, I wouldn't recommend it, not because of the hotel, but because of the location, which is scary.
