Up with the top 3 WORST ever!

Up with the WORST places I’ve ever stayed. Room stunk of septic, probably because the septic ventilation drain was outside the door. No cutlery but thank goodness there was a microwave. Water pressure was good but water stank due to septic so felt like I had to keep my mouth closed… the cherry on top was the HAIRS and stains in the bed!! My mate had to sleep on top of the sheets and we used our own pillows. Would not recommend and will never stay again. On the plus side, the SPAR down the road was great and luckily we could buy a heat and eat meal as the town had closed down completely due to the local NRL match, which they won! Go the Magpies!! Oh, and the biscuits were delicious!

Pretentiously overpriced with a friendly moron receptionist

Phoned on day of arrival in Blackall to enquire if the motel had a wheelchair accessible room. "Yes, we have a Family Room. It will be $200 per night." Arrived at motel and asked to inspect the room. The parking space allocated for the room wasn't big enough to fit a motorbike (see photo), so I would have had to park on the street. "Oh, there are two steps up to the verandah in order to access the room." Because there was no alternative accommodation in town that night (Blackall Rodeo and a large wedding in town) I asked if I could use one of the other 'non-accessible' rooms. Was shown one of them, a well-presented 1970s era room, with no realistic wheelchair parking (so parked on the street), one step into the room, and I couldn't get into the shower area, but agreed to take the room and forego the shower for $150 per night. When I got into the room I realised there was no milk available. Back to the office to ask for milk. I was given a takeaway cup with milk in it. So, it seems, I was expected to grow a third arm in order to carry the milk back to the room. The receptionist was a friendly idiot. The motel had pretentions way beyond its reality. Massively over-priced for a very basic motel in a country town. (e.g. I receltly stayed in a fully wheelchair accessible self-contained, impecibly presented three-bed cabin in Hervey Bay for $145 per night.)

Disappointing for the money

This motel has new owners so many of the reviews before this date which are about the owners will not apply. We had booked a queen bed & as we are self caterers had specifically checked if there was a fridge in the room. Unfortunately there have been some issues in the handover to the new owners and our room was allocated according to available TV reception (as not all rooms now have reception & the internet arrangements also are in the process of being resolved). We had Room 14 which is a double with a bar fridge.
The negatives:
First impressions were disappointing. Room 14 only has a bar size fridge. We had 2 eskies worth of chilled food plus ice blocks. Amazingly we fitted the contents of our 2 eskies into it by piling things on top of one another but we had to ask the owner to put the ice blocks into his freezer.
The only window in the room looks directly onto a side street so the very rough block out curtain has to be kept closed all the time making the room dark and the light needs to be on during the day.
There are two mugs & 2 large water glasses but no wine glasses, no cutlery (one teaspoon) or crockery
There is no fan in the bathroom and the old sink has some rust marks
We had to wedge the door open to get some air flow in the room
There is no hairdryer
The socket only has 2 outlets & the fridge takes up one of them, so if you want to make toast and boil the kettle you have to do one at a time.
If you need to plug in other technology there are no other power points
The positives:
The aircon is old but functional.
There are bedside lights.
The bathroom is a decent size & there is a little table and two chairs outside.
A net curtain at the window and a bigger fridge would make a difference to this room but it is tired and needs some bigger changes.. We stayed in nearby Emerald for less money at the Emerald Park Motel and there is no comparison - the latter is the standard of accommodation that should be provided - see my review of Emerald Park. Hopefully the new owners in Blackall will put some money and thought into providing similar great accommodation at the same affordable price!

Businesses should be better than this

Very difficult to reconcile the website description with reality. Was greeted with ‘no food - you will have to go to the hotel’ - this was a Tuesday night. Our room was basic and its difficult to discern the ‘retro’ decor; just looks like regular old furnishings. As noted in a previous review from a year earlier, there were no plates, cutlery etc, so the toaster and microwave were redundant.
A more serious aspect is that we have been double charged for the room and I am still waiting for the refund. We booked through Booking.com and it wasnt until just before our stay that I noticed that I had been charged a 10% City Tax. I queried this with Michelle and she assured me it would be refunded. At the time of checkin, the issue hadnt been resolved, so I agreed to a process where Michelle would charge me again for the room on my credit card, I would cancel the Booking.com booking and she would release the room charge back to me as a refund. After canceling the booking, I received (from Booking.com) the City Tax amount within 24hours, however, I have yet to receive the room charge. I followed up with an email to the motel a few weeks later and have received no response.
In a time when we are are encouraged to support rural businesses, it is very disappointing to experience this type of behaviour.
